The second novel in the New Doctor Who Adventures continues the Seventh Doctor and Ace’s story, in fact this one continues the Timewyrn story that began in Genesis. The novel opens with the Doctor and Ace arriving in England in 1951, following the events of World War II.
Unfortunately, someone or something has changed the timeline. The Nazis are in control of England. Not only does the Time Lord and his Companion have to find out what happened, and deal with the problems. They run afoul of a UK Nazi, but the Doctor realizes that if they are going to fix the problem they are going to have to go back and change whatever happened back…
So they find themselves in Nazi Germany, and they discover that Hitler has trapped the Timewyrm in his brain, which is allowing him sweeping control and plans to roll his plans across the globe, and perhaps even into the stars!
But there’s someone else at work as well, tying in with the Nazi fascination with the occult, and it will bring the Doctor face to face with an enemy from his second incarnation.
Ace and the Doctor have to make sure that the events of World War II remain unchanged, and that may mean helping some of the top Nazi brass as they fall under the sway of a dangerous enemy who has their own plans for the Fourth Reich.
It ends up being a nicely told, fast-paced tale. But that should come as no surprise considering Dicks long history with Doctor Who. There are a couple of nods and Easter Eggs to previous adventures and he knows these characters so well that their dialogue rings with the voices of Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred.
And while the Timewyrm is definitely the nemesis of this four book adventure, much like the actual series, that doesn’t mean the Doctor can’t be caught up in other things, like trying to fix the events of the war, and coming face to face with an old foe.
I’m quite enjoying these novels so far, true I’ve only done two, but they have a high caliber, they know their characters, the style of storytelling that works best, and they know their fans. And because of the format, a novel, the characters can do and see more, it’s budget is financed by the imagination!
I also enjoy the glimpses into the minds of the Doctor, and Ace, it helps expand the characters while keeping them in line with the adventures we’ve seen them on. It’s a very enjoyable read.
I’ll be interested to see how the third story plays out when I dive into Apocalypse!
