Magnum P.I. (2023) – Consciousness of Guilt, and Extracurricular Activities

Katsumoto (Tim Kang) turns to Magnum (Jay Hernandez) for help when a case he’s involved with falls apart during the trial, and Higgins (Perdita Weeks) wonders if she and Magnum spend too much time together and should see what it’s like when they spend a day apart.

Consciousness of Guilt was written by Andre Jackson and David Slack, and it first debuted on 6 December, 2023.

Magnum digs into the case as he investigates Tate Walker (Taylor Handley) who may have murdered his brother, the case that was dismissed, but as Magnum digs deeper, thanks to a little help from another investigator, Pierre (Jon Lovitz), they find another murder, and possibly a new reason for the murder of his brother.

Meanwhile, Jin (Bobby Lee) is convinced that something has happened to one of the dog owners that he walks for. Higgins doesn’t initially believe him but as the story progresses not only do we learn that despite his goofy approach that Jin is right, but that he also has a chance to be a real hero this time out.

There are some great character beats, and while I’m not always a fan of Jin, he does have some wonderful bits here. And I loved seeing Rick (Zachary Knighton) and Magnum sneaking into a cigar club.

It’s a fun story, and I do like how the characters have developed over the past few seasons and all of them have been given time to shine throughout.

I’ve said it before, it’s not classic Magnum, but it is damned fun, and I like these characters.

Extracurricular Activities was written by Katie Varney and debuted on 13 December, 2023.

Magnum and Higgins are hired by a university dean to investigate a professor, Brody (Andrew J. West) about allegations of inappropriate relationships with his female students. While Higgins goes undercover as a student, Magnum works to get information about Brody. And as the pair dig in, neither of them are happy with what they find out about Brody, including the possibility of a death connected to Brody’s proclivities.

The b-story sees Rick, Katsumoto, T.C. (Stephen Hill), Cade (Martin Martinez) and Dennis (Lance Lim) having a camping weekend. Still, things aren’t going to go well because Dennis is focused on getting away to Michigan for university. Cade is worried about revealing to T.C. that he doesn’t want to pursue a post-secondary education. Things get complicated when someone steals the camp’s generator.

In the end both stories wrap up nicely, and once again, as simple as some of the storylines are, it’s the character moments that really make this series work.

Next time, I finish up my journey with Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha.
