Magnum P.I. (2023) – The Passenger, and The Breaking Point

Magnum (Jay Hernandez) moved from CBS to NBC for one final season which got underway on 19 February, 2023. Written by one of the showrunners Eric Guggenheim, the series had to effectively re-introduce the characters (with an introductory voiceover and compilation of the series to date) and bring returning viewers all the continuity that they had come to expect from the series.

Magnum and Higgins (Perdita Weeks) are weighing the pros and cons of pursuing their relationship, Rick (Zachary Knighton) is a new dad, and what is Katsumoto (Tim Kang) going to do now that he’s lost his badge following the events of last season’s ending.

And of course, there’s a case to be worked as well. A woman, Sara (Kelly Thiebaud), comes to the pair with a worrying problem, her husband died in a car crash six nights earlier, but a traffic cam shows that he wasn’t alone in the car. What really happened? Was it an accident? Murder? Who was the passenger? As the pair dig into the case, things aren’t what they appear to be, and the case ends up dealing with domestic abuse.

The pair dig into their investigation as the episode checks in with all of our regular characters, and there’s a new cop in the neighbourhood, Chris Childs (Michael Rady), while Katsumoto decides to fight for his badge back. There’s also something going on with Captain Buck Greene (James Remar) who seems to be missing and has listed Magnum as his emergency contact. Magnum asks T.C. (Stephen Hill) to lend a hand in the search, and all of a sudden there seems to be a lot going on in this episode.

The episode ends with the reveal that Buck has been captured by someone who wants to know about a unit he ran in Afghanistan so that they can be killed. How much do you want to bet it’s Magnum and his team.

And yet, it’s balanced well and handled nicely.

The Breaking Point was written by Gene Hong and first aired on 19 February, 2023, part of the two-episode premiere.

Magnum and Higgins, still continuing their romance, take a case that sees them working undercover as lifeguards at the beach to solve a murder.

Jin (Bobby Lee) is running a new business and has won a storage unit auction that he knows belonged to a thief and when he finds a Purple Heart that was stolen he reaches out to T.C. to help him find the owner.

While there is fun stuff with Rick being a new dad in these episodes, Suzy (Betsy Phillips) is glaringly missing despite the fact that she’s a new mother!

And at the end of the episode as everything wraps up nicely for Magnum and the rest, Childs gets a call about a body that’s washed up. Buck Greene is dead. That’ll give Magnum and the boys some motivation for the season.

I will say this, I like the way the banter between Magnum and Higgins has changed to be more flirty, romantic and playful with one another. And Hernandez and Weeks are bringing the change to the relationship to life in a great way. They are fun to watch.

There’s more to come as I continue my journey through the final season, and explore more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD available from Paramount Canada now! Aloha!
