Magnum P.I. (2022) – Remember Me Tomorrow, and Shallow Grave, Deep Water

Remember Me Tomorrow was written by Mike Diaz, Barbie Kligman and Kate Varney and it first debuted on 1 April, 2022.

Lots are going on in this episode, Suzy (Betsy Phillips) is returning to the island, pregnant, and ready to talk to Rick (Zachary Knighton) about not continuing their relationship, because they’re going to be in one another’s lives all the time now because of the baby.

Higgins (Perdita Weeks) is a little stunned to find that her client, Ella (Hala Finley)is all of thirteen years old. She’s even more surprised when Ella brings her a triple homicide case from five years ago. Higgins learns that Ella’s mother was HPD, and this was a case she was digging into before she died of cancer. Her father, Cole (Niall Matter) is furious when he finds out that Ella hasn’t let it go yet, but Higgins is determined now to discover what really happened in the case.

Magnum (Jay Hernandez) meanwhile is visiting with a terminal Vietnam vet, Bob (Max Gail, a familiar face!) and as the pair bond, Magnum learns that Bob is estranged from his brother, Danny (Robert Pine, another very familiar face, who also played Magnum’s father in the original series), who was a draft-dodger and went to Canada.

It’s a nice episode that shows how we remember people, what we do to honour them, how we involve ourselves in people’s lives and how far they let us in. It’s a fun and well-thought-out episode.

Shallow Grave, Deep Water sees the episode opening with the group attending Bob’s funeral, which is really nice to see. It takes place two weeks after the pervious episode, and also sees Jay Hernandez settle into the director’s seat for the first time.

Written by David Slack this episode was first broadcast on 8 April, 2022 and sees Magnum conferring with Danny following the funeral, and Katsumoto (Tim Kang) arriving at a homicide crime scene on his Ducati. The victim may have a connection to Magnum’s and the groups late friend, Nuzo (Domenick Lombardozzi). He may have been involved in the murder victim, or at least there’s the possibility because of an incriminating voicemail.

Was he not as clean-cut and above-board as Magnum believed? Magnum is determined to prove his friend’s memory innocent, and he’s willing to go to extreme lengths to prove it. But Magnum also knows that Nuzo has kept secrets, something Nuzo didn’t even share with Rick and T.C. Unfortunately, it not only gave Nuzo motive but opportunity.

The group insists that Magnum tell Katsumoto everything he knows. Something he doesn’t want to do because he doesn’t want to jeopardize Nuzo’s military honours, and the benefits his family receive because of his service.

The search leads them to a sunken container, a horrifying discovery and the real guilty party and what Nuzo was doing.

It’s a solid episode and strains Magnum and Katsumoto’s relationship, and Hernandez does alright with the directing gig.

And Higgins is apparently texting Cole and vice versa, which may put a crimp on any romantic intentions Higgins and Magnum may have had for each other.

Magnum, T.C. (Stephen Hill) and Rick have all shaved for the funeral, with T.C. keeping a moustache.

Next week, we finish season four and head off to the fifth and final season as I explore Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
