Magnum P.I. (2021) – Texas Wedge, and Those We Leave Behind

Higgins (Perdita Weeks) is doing MI6 work and Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and Lia (Chantal Tully) continue their romance before diving into this week’s case, which will include figuring out who has posted mobile billboards of Magnum and Higgins around the island. Could that be Jin’s (Bobbly Lee) fault?

Texas Wedge was written by Gene Hong and was first broadcast on 15 October, 2021.

The pair go undercover at a high-end country club when a caddie and up-and-coming golfer, Trevor (Danny Kang) is accused of stealing a member’s clubs. Magnum goes undercover as staff working with Rick (Zachary Knighton), while Higgins goes in as a member and really leans into the role.

But the clubs are all part of an ongoing scheme of smuggling ivory out of South Africa, something overseen by Zev Marker (another nefarious turn by Sebastian Roche). Of course, Magnum and Higgins are going to be able to outsmart him and tie everything up nicely before the end of the episode, but this time out, I’m more interested in the character bits.

Jin actually gets a solid story arc in this episode, he is trying to impress his young niece, Joon (Kaylee Hottle) and T.C. (Stephen Hill) tries to help out a young kid, Cade (Martin Martinez) who is fishing for a job at La Mariana.

It’s a really fun episode, that expands the world by introducing some new characters, which also lets us see our regulars in a new way too. We’re four seasons in, and this series while sharing some of the DNA of the original series, has very much become its own thing.

Those We Leave Behind sees Higgins seeking some therapy on how to deal with being separated from her doctor-boyfriend, but her therapist seems to have a problem she needs help with, one of her patients died from suicide, but she doesn’t believe it. Higgins is determined to investigate.

Katsumoto (Tim Kang) gets a personal blow when his estranged wife, Beth (Shawna Christensen) and son, Dennis (Lance Lim) are involved in a carjacking and Dennis ends up in surgery. Were they targeted or was it a random carjacking? Magnum and Higgins pull out all the stops to run down the suspects.

Written by Barbie Kligman this episode was first broadcast on 22 October, 2021. The pair work both cases, relieved to hear that Dennis is going to be fine, and they discover the truth about what happened with the young woman’s suicide, why she did it, and how far a parent will go to protect their child. Something that is paralleled by Katsumoto’s story.

It’s an important episode as it talks about the concept of talking about your problems and feelings, by getting it out there. It also lets Higgins begin to realize she may not be in love with the doctor anymore, and Rick discovers that Cade has nowhere to live, he’s sleeping in La Mariana’s stock room.

There’s more to go with season four as I dive deeper into Magnum P.I.: The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
