Magnum P.I. (2021) – Before the Fall, and Bloodline

Magnum’s (Jay Hernandez) uncle, Bernardo (Steven Michael Quezada) arrives on the island for a visit, to share news of his coming wedding and shares a troubling secret about his mother in Before the Fall. Written by Mike Diaz this episode first debuted on 30 April, 2021.

Bernardo asks Magnum to be his best man, and Bernardo reveals that he was always in love with Thomas’ mother, the love-of-his-life, and after the death of Magnum’s father, they had a relationship togeher, but he’s happy now, and wants Magnum to share in it. Can Magnum get over these revelations and celebrate his uncle’s happiness?

But there’s lots of other things going on as well. Higgins (Perdita Weeks) has decided to reveal the nature of her past to Dr. Ethan (Jay Shah), T.C. (Stephen Hill) offers Shammy (Christopher Thornton) a partnership and possible helicopter licence something he’s reticent to do.

Even Rick (Zachary Knighton) is confused by Shammy’s behavior, but the friends will discover the truth and learn the best way to help their pal, Shammy, out.

On the flight, the pair notice a pair of hikers on the legendary and locked-off Haiku Stairs, only to learn later that one of them was murdered. So T.C. calls in Magnum and Higgins, and we get a wonderful pairing of Higgins and T.C.

And of course, Katsumoto (Tim Kang) will be there when the HPD needs to step in and help in the investigation.

There are lots of discussions about family, love, and relationships and it leads to Dr. Ethan saying he needs some time away to figure out his feelings for Higgins, so he’s going to sign up for Doctors Without Borders for six months.

Bloodline closed out the third season on 7 May, 2021. Written by Geoffrey Thorne and one of the series’ showrunners, Eric Guggenheim the episode sees Magnum and Higgins working a stalking case that involves a former spy. Chloe (Grace Victoria Cox) hires the pair to help her find out who is stalking her after she finds a tracker on her new car.

Someone is staking out Chloe because they think she has a connection to Henry Sellers (Alex Carter). She does, but doesn’t know it. Henry is her father, and he’s a spy, for the Russians but was going to defect, and now every government agency of two nations is hunting him.

When Chloe is seized by Russian agents, and Henry eludes American agents to rescue her, everyone finds themselves in a huge firefight that will wrap up the season with lots of excitement.

Jin (Bobby Lee) is back to make an appearance and provide some comic relief, while T.C. and Rick urge Magnum to make a move on the now (possibly?) single Higgins. But as the episode progresses, and Magnum begins to see possibilities for the two of them, Higgins and Ethan begin to reconnect and she decides to join him for the Doctors with Borders trip.

Next time we launch season four as I continue exploring Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, now available from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
