Magnum P.I. (2021) – Killer on the Midnight Watch, and Someone to Watch Over Me

Magnum (Jay Hernandez) is having nightmares about the white Range Rover, so it’s probably a good thing that he and Higgins (Perdita Weeks) get a case involving an overeager neighbourhood watch community who believes that one of the people in their area is a serial killer.

Written by Gene Hong this episode was first broadcast on 5 February, 2021.

Jin (Bobby Lee) shows up for another visit it seems he is running a literal money laundering business as people are worried about germs and viruses since COVID. He actually meets someone he clicks with which provides a fun moment between his tumble dry cycles. He comes to Magnum to help him track her down, but it just serves as filler while Higgins and Magnum dig deeper into the neighbourhood watch case. But that means Rick (Zachary Knighton) and T.C. (Stephen Hill) have to deal with him at La Mariana. They also help him get sorted in helping out his new friend.

Of course, things are going to get complicated for the pair as it seems the group may be right, and Professor Roland Bar (Assaf Cohen) could be as dangerous as they think he is.

As the pair investigate and they find evidence that he’s abducted women, they reach out to Katsumoto (Tim Kang). But, of course, there’s more going on here than was initially known. It looks devious, and villainous, but Bar is actually working to rescue trafficked women and help them escape.

So the group heads out to find where the rest of the trafficked women are and put a stop to it.

Someone to Watch Over Me sees Dr. Ethan (Jay Ali) reach out to Magnum and Higgins to help find a missing young man who needs emergency surgery, he has a bullet lodged in his chest, but he’s gone missing. He’s scared, worried, and could be in trouble.

Written by Barbie Kligman this episode was first broadcast on 12 February, 2021. Magnum and Higgins take the case and rush out to find Paul (Jarren Amian), though Magnum is less than happy to be doing this pro bono, but a ticking clock keeps them on task.

What they find is an underground surgery! But that’s only the first step in finding Paul and what is really going on here. There’s commentary about gun safety in the home, and the repercussions of it resonating throughout life.

There’s a little tension between the partners because Higgins has told Ethan about his insomnia, and there may be a little jealousy with all the PDA and joy that Higgins and Ethan are revelling in. But you know it can’t last, the show isn’t designed like that. So how long do they have?

T.C. has been asked to speak to a military recruit who may have signed up for the wrong reasons. Joey (Avery Whitted) spends some time with T.C. and he asks whether Joey is doing this for himself or his family.

Suzy (Betsy Phillips) returns to La Mariana, to paint a mural on the restored walls, following the hurricane, and there’s a romantic spark between the two that hints at a possible future for the two characters. But she needs a job, so that may put a kibosh on any romance…

There’s more on Thursday as I continue to explore Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
