Magnum P.I. (2020) – Mondays are for Murder, and A Game of Cat and Mouse

Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and T.C. (Stephen Hill) pose as efficiency experts to investigate a company, but they are actually investigating a murder that took place the previous week when a manager was murdered and everyone in the office is a suspect.

Mondays are for Murder was written by Alfredo Barrios Jr. from a story by showrunners Peter M. Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim. It first debuted on 10 January, 2020.

Higgins (Perdita Weeks) fakes an injury to not help out on the case, leaving Magnum and T.C. to deal with it. Something that brings him back in contact with Todd Stewart (Matthew Del Negro), someone Magnum had a run-in with previously.

Rick (Zachary Knighton) learns the truth about Higgins’ ‘injury,’ and he pleads with Higgins to be honest with Thomas about why she didn’t want the case. But Thomas is a good private investigator, he may already know, and not be saying anything to keep from embarrassing Higgins.

It’s a fun episode, and seeing T.C. and Magnum in suits is wonderfully jarring because we’re so used to seeing them in bright and fun colours. It also shows that Higgins begins to understand why Magnum doesn’t always take cash for cases, and will occasionally barter so that people can get by.

While not quite as great as some of the episodes, it moves the characters forward, puts them in a different environment than usual, and helps develop the Magnum/Higgins working relationship a little further.

But honestly, let’s get back to seeing the prettier side of Hawaii. Putting the majority of this episode in an office building makes the show look like countless other procedurals.

A Game of Cat and Mouse was written by Gene Hong and first aired on 31 January, 2020.

The episode opens by establishing that apparently, the group gets together on the regular for poker night. A game that not only includes Magnum, Rick, T.C., Higgins but Katsumoto (Tim Kang), Kumu (Amy Hill), Shammy (Christopher Thornton), and Kamekona (Taylor Wily).

Jin (Bobby Lee) is upset to be left out of the game, but he’s calling Magnum from prison with information about stopping a killer from killing an innocent woman. But is this just the first move in a continuing gambit?

With Jin coming along, Magnum and Higgins are trying to find out who the target is, and who the assassin is. It’s gonna be a bit of a fun ride, with Jin providing some laughs, and an investigation that puts Magnum and Higgins through their paces.

This one is fun for the characters, and viewers also realize how horrible some of them are at singing as they take part in some karaoke at the end of the episode at La Marina. But they do look like they are having a good time.

There’s more fun in the sun to be had next week as I explore more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, which is available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
