Magnum P.I. (2019/2020) – Day I Met the Devil, and Desperate Measures

Magnum (Jay Hernandez) is reactivated by the Navy, and Greene (James Remar) gives him an assignment that sounds above-board, if a little dangerous. Greene denies him using Rick (Zachary Knighton) and T.C. (Stephen Hill) saying he has a CIA back-up team for an assignment that while sanctioned is off the books and will be denied should he be caught or killed.

But things aren’t going to be that easy, especially when it seems that the entire mission may be a lie, and Thomas may be set up.

Day I Met the Devil was written by Alfredo Barrios Jr. and debuted on 13 December, 2019.

Magnum’s cohorts for the assignment are Roy Till (Anthony Montgomery) and Gene Curtis (Peter Facinelli). But it’s all a set-up, because Greene’s son, David (Jason Remar) was kidnapped, and in the subsequent hostage exchange is mortally wounded. It seems Greene had to offer up Magnum for the return of his son.

Now Magnum’s friends, including Higgins (Perdita Weeks), Shammy (Christopher Thornton) and Katsumoto (Tim Kang) have to head to Argentina to rescue him. It seems this all ties in with ‘Ivan’ the same mastermind who organized the hostage-taking at Robin’s Nest a number of episodes back.

But even as his friends are en route, Magnum and his square are still working to complete the mission and pull things off. But can they all be trusted? Is one of them actually Ivan?

There is lots of fallout in this episode, particularly for Greene, who resigns his commission. Ivan is still out there, but at least Magnum has a face to go with the name. Will Ivan be back? And is Buck Greene gone for good?

Desperate Measures is a crossover episode with Hawaii 5-0 characters, and ties in directly with their episode Where Were You When the Rain was Pouring? This is the episode that ties things up.

It was written by series showrunners Peter M. Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim, and first debuted on 3 January, 2020.

It seems at the end of the Hawaii 5-0 episode, Junior Reigns (Beulah Keole) is kidnapped, and Tani Ray (Meaghan Rath) and Quinn Liu (Katrina Lau) come to Magnum and Higgins for help. Who kidnapped Junior and why, and what will it take to get him back?

Apparently, they want the NOC list back (you’ve seen Mission: Impossible right?). That’s what they went after in the 5-0 episode, and the criminals want the NOC list, and are holding Junior hostage, something that the American government doesn’t want, so they have every law enforcement agency hunting Liu and Ray down.

While the pair lay low at Robin’s Nest, Magnum and the team try to come up with a plan to keep the agents on the NOC list safe as well as getting Junior back.

It’s a rollicking episode and a lot of fun. You also don’t have to see the Hawaii 5-0 episode to enjoy it. But if you want to, it comes as an extra on Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, which is available now from Paramount Canada!Aloha!
