Magnum P.I. (2019) – The Man in the Secret Room, and He Came By Night

Magnum (Jay Hernandez) is still smarting and sulking after the break-up with Abby and takes some temporary work as the head of security for a hotel taking over for a former p.i., Russ (Lee Majors!). It’s not too long before he finds himself embroiled in another mystery, with The Man in the Secret Room.

Written by Joe Gazzam, this episode first debuted on 8 November, 2019.

Higgins (Perdita Weeks) stays close, claiming a staycation at the hotel, so she’ll be on hand when Magnum finds some trouble coming his way.

A woman, Georgia (Catherine Dent) ends up dead, seemingly thrown from the balcony of her own room, which was locked. The more Magnum investigates the more he discovers that Georgia was actually conducting an investigation of her own.

So what’s going on here? Georgia was a reporter, and Thomas continues her investigation discovering a hidden bungalow on the hotel property, a bungalow that leads to evidence of a second murder.

Katsumoto (Tim Kang) works the case from the HPD side while Rick (Zachary Knighton) and T.C. (Stephen Hill) worry about Thomas. Icepick (Corbin Bernsen) makes an appearance as does La Mariana’s piano player, Nicky the Kid (Larry Manetti).

There are lots of little character beats going on, Icepick isn’t well, and the character continuity for the main characters continues to develop. I also really like seeing Katsumoto, Magnum and Higgins working together as an investigative trio.

The case leads right to a crime boss who has had run-ins with Katsumoto before, can Magnum tie all the leads and clues together? And will Magnum be able to get over the loss of Abby anytime soon?

He Came By Night was written by Barbie Kligman and first debuted on 15 November, 2019.

The business partnership is tested between Magnum and Higgins when Magnum takes a questionable case without consulting her first. It involves moving drug money to keep someone safe during their prison turn. Higgins is less than happy, especially when the client, Lani (Valerie Cruz) isn’t completely honest about everything.

Higgins refuses to help so Magnum is on his own. While Magnum works the case, he tries to figure out what he did wrong with Higgins, and the pair will have to have a conversation about how to work together and agree on what cases they plan to take.

Shammy (Christopher Thornton)and T.C. are attending a support group meeting when they realize the speaker is an imposter. But why? Why steal a dead vet’s identity? It seems there’s more going on here than was first thought, and also tells a solid story about vets, something this series and the original always prided themselves on.

And Rick gets Train and Skylar Grey to perform at La Mariana.

The fun in the sun continues on Thursday as I explore more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
