Magnum P.I. (2019) – Black is the Widow, and A Kiss Before Dying

Magnum (Jay Hernandez) is on the hunt for a murderer who may be using a dating app to find targets. Black is the Widow was written by Neil Tolkin and first aired on 4 March, 2019.

Karen McDowell (Gia Mantegna) hires Magnum to investigate the death of her father, who was killed during a carjacking. As Magnum investigates, he learns that Roland McDowell (Jonathan Goldstein) was using a dating app, and the private investigator begins to think there may be a connection.

But maybe Karen did it? A smokescreen to take suspicion off of her?

While Thomas investigates he meets lawyer, Abby (Brooke Lyons) someone he feels that he may connect with if he wasn’t on a case pretending to be someone else. He also has a conversation with Higgins (Perdita Weeks) about how both of them should get back in the field, as both of them have had severe problems of the heart revisited over the past couple of episodes.

Of course, things aren’t going to be easy, there will be more going on than is initially thought, and Thomas will have to dig deep to find out what is really going on. And Katsumoto (Tim Kang) may need some help from Magnum before the episode ends.

Magnum, in turn, is going to need lots of help from Higgins and the rest before everything wraps up though.

It’s a fun episode, and I hope we see more of Abby as she seems like a fun possible love interest for Thomas. The series is still building its own continuity and is developing its characters nicely. Sure it’s glossy, sun-drenched melodrama, but it’s a lot of fun.

A Kiss Before Dying was written by Barbie Kligman and Ashley Charbonnet. It first debuted on 11 March, 2019.

When the Dobermans (Zeus and Apollo) discover a buried bone, Magnum turns it over to the HPD, because it’s possibly a murder victim. Katsumoto finds himself quickly reassigned, taking him off the case, because there’s every possibility he knew the victim, it was his former mentor.

But that’s not going to stop Thomas from investigating and getting some help from Katsumoto along the way. In fact, the pair are forced to partner up, and you can see the beginning of a begrudging friendship as the pair doggedly pursue the truth.

When they wrap up the case, Gordon Katsumoto gifts Thomas with the badges of his mentor, enshrined in a case with a warning not to ever take them out.

The episode also introduces one of the original series actors, Roger E. Mosley as barber, John Booky. And Abby, introduced in the previous episode, gets name-checked.

Rick (Zachary Kingston) and T.C. (Stephen Hill) are doing a favor for Icepick, and T.C. warns it’s not going to be easy, and his right. They’re helping a woman see her daughter, but she’s been in hiding with Witness Relocation. She’s testifying against the Yakuza, and has slipped onto the island unawares to see her daughter.

There’s more Hawaiian fun next week as I explore more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
