Magnum P.I. (2019) – Day the Past Came Back, and Murder is Never Quiet

The series keeps that continuity running and introduces another legacy character, MacReynolds (Ammie Masterson) in Day the Past Came Back. Written by Peter M. Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim. It first debuted on 18 February, 2019.

With callbacks to the series premiere, Magnum (Jay Hernandez) is kidnapped and taken back to the shipwreck of stolen Iraqi gold that led to Nuzo’s (Domenick Lombardozzi). After he escapes and regroups with his friends, he calls in Mac for some help, and is dealt the shattering reveal that his ex-fiancee, a CIA case officer named Hannah (Jordanna Brewster), who at some point betrayed Magnum, T.C. (Stephen Hill) and Rick (Zachary Kingston), may have a connection to it. He witnessed her doing something while they were being held prisoner back when the guys served.

Did she give them up for a payoff? That’s what it looked like, and now she may be on the island.

When Hannah ambushes Magnum and Higgins (Perdita Weeks) things are gonna go rough for the private investigator. She asks him to drop the case, to back off while refusing to answer any of his questions.

She’s after the gold, which leads to another ambush, that sees the gang in a firefight to hold off the baddies before they can gran the truck full of recovered gold. Hannah and her team are able to make off with the gold, but Magnum is on the truck. But Hannah shoots him in an attempt to make a getaway, which also goes sideways – she escapes but without the gold.

So what’s going on? What’s it all about? What did Hannah do and will she be back?

There are some moments of shoddy greenscreen, but it’s a fun adventure nonetheless, filling out the characters some more, and playing with the legacy of the series.

Murder is Never Quiet was written by Barbie Kligman and first aired on 25 February, 2019. When Magnum weasels out of jury duty, the defendant’s mother, Brianna (Paula Newsome) comes to see Magnum. The case is against Her son, Josh (Wavyy Jonez), who is going to take a plea bargain in 24 hours to avoid jail time. Magnum has 24 hours to prove Josh’s innocence.

Josh was blackout drunk at the time of the murder he’s being tried for, the death of his girlfriend. Magnum advises he get more AA help, and Josh is afraid that maybe he did kill her. Magnum knows he is on the right track when someone threatens him to back off from the investigation.

Magnum and Higgins, with some reticent help from Katsumoto (Tim Kang) are able to start sorting out what is really going on, and how it ties into the bank where the victim worked.

Meanwhile, Rick, T.C. and Shammy (Christopher Thornton) have been building houses for disabled vets, and someone has stolen all the kitchen appliances and more from their latest build.

Things end happily, Thomas proves Josh’s innocence, and the appliances for the vet’s new home are recovered, and the gang pulls together to do the right thing. It’s sometimes sappy but it is sun-drenched fun.

There’s more sun and adventure on Thursday as I explore more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
