Magnum P.I. (2019) – Nowhere to Hide, and Winner Takes All

Magnum (Jay Hernandez) is training for the Iron Man competition but gets involved in a case involving a missing Russian fugitive, something that will put Higgins (Perdita Weeks) and Kumu (Amy Hill) in trouble.

Written by Joe Gazzam from a story he developed with Peter M. Lenkov, Nowhere to Hide first aired on 14 January, 2019.

Magnum is hired by Katya (Vera Cherny) to find her missing causing, Sergei (Ilia Volok) a journalist critical of the Russian government. No sooner is he on the case, with some help from Rick (Zachary Kingston) when he runs afoul of some thugs who are pursuing Sergei.

As usual, not everything is going to be as it seems, because Katya isn’t who she claims to be, she’s a dangerous agent and she’s after Sergei. And she’s more than happy to let Magnum do all the work. To make sure Magnum does the job, she is holding Higgins and Kumu.

Katsumoto (Tim Kang) is less than thrilled about having to help Magnum out again, the private investigator has burned any good credit he may have had with HPD. When Magnum gives him the rundown, however, he realizes he’ll have to set aside personal grievances to help Magnum out.

Things are made more complicated by the fact that Sergei goes on the run, and Thomas will have to find him all over again before he can help Higgins and Kumu. And when T.C. (Stephen Hill), Rick and Magnum catch up to him, they discover he’s not a journalist, but a scientist, one who has perfected the suitcase nuke but wants to dismantle and destroy his work.

Work that Katya wants to sell to the highest bidder.

Will Magnum be able to resolve the situation? Well, with a little help from his friends, and Zeus and Apollo things it may sort itself out.

Winner Takes All sees the return of Luther Gillis (Ken Jeong) as a bail agent tells all the private investigators and bounty hunters on the island that there’s a fortune and a ticking clock to run down an escaped murder suspect, Skip Jenkins (Jake Matthews) and get him to court.

Written by Gene Hong, this episode was first broadcast on 20 January, 2019.

With the Ferrari off-limits because of his debts, Magnum needs this payoff but things get complicated, of course, when he gets paired with Luther, and his ‘apprentice,’ Willa (Halston Sage). Things start off okay, but Willa decides to go it alone, betraying the pair of investigators, so they have to pair up and work together to beat Willa and the others in tracking down Skip.

But what if Skip is innocent? Can Magnum prove that and still get the payday? Will Luther help him prove it? The rest of the gang helps out, working to outwit Willa and the rest of the bounty hunters and investigators, but Magnum will risk it all to prove Skip’s innocence.

Of course, Skip is innocent, and Magnum finds out what is really going on. Magnum will have to work hard to keep Skip safe, stop the real murderer, and tying up all the other loose ends that could cause everything to go sideways.

It’s a fun episode, putting Luther in Magnum’s shirt makes for some funny bits, not to mention putting Magnum on a Vespa, but there’s also some great character stuff, and the reveal that Magnum’s mother passed while he was deployed.

There’s more sun and adventure next time as I explore more cases with Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD available now from Paramount Canada, aloha!
