Magnum P.I. (2018) – The Ties That Bind, and Bad Day to Be a Hero

Thomas (Jay Hernandez) takes a case involving a kidnapped girl, she’s been returned, but she’s not the same person anymore, and her parents want the person who took her captured. At the same time, we learn a little more about what happened when Magnum and his friends were held by the Taliban when they were in-country.

The Ties That Bind was written by Ashley Gable and was first broadcast on 19 November, 2018.

Amanda (Lyrica Okano) was a vibrant young woman, something she’s lost since she was kidnapped and escaped, but Higgins (Perdita Weeks) helps her find some balance with yoga, and then the group begins an in-depth search of the jungle to find where she was held.

They find where Amanda was held, and when Katsumoto (Tim Kang) shows up, Magnum realizes that her abductor had a badge.

As Magnum and Higgins investigate deeper, they discover just a little too late, that Amanda’s abduction isn’t the only thing happening, it’s something that involves her entire family. Something that may be bigger than the entire family, and involves an assassination attempt on a U.S. attorney, something Amanda’s father, Alan (Louis Ozawa) must carry out if he wants his family to be safe.

Will Magnum be able to stop Alan from committing a horrible murder, save his family and catch the villain?

The series is fun, action-oriented melodrama that hasn’t quite caught the spirit of the original but is very much its own thing, and enjoys it.

Bad Day to be a Hero puts Rick (Zachary Kingston) in some serious trouble when a poker game he organized to help a friend he’s romantically interested in, Toni (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) gets robbed by some men in masks. Toni was the bank for the game and the high-roller crime boss, Pascale (Kawika Smith) who was ahead wants his cash, now.

Rick turns to Magnum for help, and we get our first look at another legacy character, Corbin Bernsen takes on the role of Rick’s father figure, the jailed Icepick.

Written by Ashley Charbonnet, this episode was first broadcast on 10 December, 2018.

Rick is not thinking clearly, because he’s trying to get somewhere with Toni, so it falls to Magnum, Higgins and T.C. (Stephen Hill) to run down leads with some help from Higgins, who trots out an American accent to help.

So who stole the money? The bodies are piling up, the money’s gone, and Toni could be in lots of trouble. But when Magnum learns the truth, he’ll need the help of all of his friends to resolve this case. And as always, it turns up to be bigger than was originally thought.

Sadly, there’s some pretty horrible green screen with T.C. and Magnum in the Ferrari that is really jarring considering the beauty of the rest of the episode, and the gorgeous locations. In fact, there are a number of shakey FX shots, one involving T.C’s Island Hopper chopper. This really detracted from the episode, which until know, had seemed to do a nice job with their effects and location work.

Still, we’ve been introduced to Icepick, and Rick starts to continually get his heartbroken, just like his predecessor.

There is more sun and fun next week as I explore more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
