Sony, through their Columbia Pictures label, delivers a perfectly timed 4K collection for the romantic and the film lover. Collecting six films spanning sixty-two years, this lovingly curated ensemble is sure to delight countless viewers whether they are being introduced to classic films, or revisiting them for the umpteenth time.
I’m going to take my time, and write individual reviews for each of the films in the collection, and it’s winning list of titles; 1940’s His Girl Friday with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, directed by Howard Hawks, 1967’s iconic Sidney Poiter film Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (a glaring oversight in my cinematic viewing, I’ve never seen this) which also started Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn and Katharine Houghton, 1979’s Kramer vs. Kramer (the other classic in this collection that I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never seen) starring Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman, the John Carpenter film, Starman, with Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen from 1984, the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan rom-com, 1993’s Sleepless in Seattle, and 2003’s Punch-Drunk Love with Adam Sandler and Emily Watson.
Each 4K disc is accompanied by a Blu-ray version, and this is where the extras are usually loaded, and there are tons to explore for all the films, from commentaries to behind-the-scenes docs, trailers, featurettes, there is so much to explore.

And if you’re a John Carpenter fan like me, and you loved Starman, like me, well then you’ll be wowed by the fact that the 4K Starman in this set comes with not only the expected special features, but two 4k discs loaded with all 22 episodes of the 1986 television series, starring Robert Hays. That’s something I will be exploring episode by episode, and writing about it in the near future, stay tuned!
Accompanying this set, which comes in this gorgeous fold-out box, is an eighty-page book that takes the reader behind the scenes with production photos, and insights into the making of the film, including its 4K upgrade, which includes scans of the film’s negative to bring out the details captured on the film to its sharpest clarity. I cannot wait to explore each and every one of them.
There is something for almost every film lover in these collections from Columbia Pictures, and you’ve probably never seen them looking this good. I was slow to join the 4K revolution, but having seen how some classic films have been rendered by these updates, looking sharper and more beautiful than they were when they were screened, I am a complete convert.
And Sony has done a wonderful job with the picture and the sound of each of these films, treating them lovingly, and delivering a collection that is as sure to wow the eye as it is to woo the heart. This gathering of love stories is simply beautiful, perfectly timed, and each entry in the Columbia Classics series is a must-have for any passionate, physical media cinephile.
