Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2023) – Charades, and Lost in Translation

Spock (Ethan Peck) and Chapel (Jess Bush) are involved in an accident, and the aliens who caused it repair the shuttle, and the injured Spock, but his mixed DNA causes problems, so they use Chapel as the guideline, and make him human in Charades.

Written by Kathryn Lyn and Henry Alonso Myers this episode debuted on 13 July, 2023.

Spock’s humanity allows for some fun and comedic moments, but things get really complicated when his mother, Amanda (Mia Kirshner) with news that T’Pring (Gia Sandhu) will be visiting with her parents, T’Pril (Ellora Patnaik) and Sevet (Michael Benyaer), as part of the engagement process.

It’s not going to be easy, and while Pike (Anson Mount) watches and tries to help from the sidelines, Chapel, Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Ortegas (Melissa Navia) attempt to seek out the aliens and ask them for help.

There are some great continuing story threads, Chapel is getting ready to apply for a position off the ship involved with archeology, and the Spock/Chapel thing continues to develop in an interesting way, as does the engagement between Spock and T’Pring.

Chapel fights for Spock to be returned to his previous state while Spock fights to survive T’Pring’s parents.

Although, how Spock will feel when he’s returned to normal, and a vegetarian, to recall how much bacon he ate is up for debate. It’s a fun episode, but with some wonderfully crafted character moments.

Peck is so entertaining, letting Spock experience his emotions and how he deals with them, and how he comes to understand his mother better, but also how close he gets to telling Chapel how he feels for her.

And the way the episode ends!

Lost in Translation pairs up Uhura and James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley), the newly promoted First Officer of the Farragut, and by episode’s end, introduces to legendary characters to each other. But Uhura has to get through the terrifying visions she’s having first.

Written by Onitra Johnson and David Reed, this episode was first broadcast on 20 July, 2023.

The Enterprise is in a deuterium cloud that is going to be used as a refueling station and jumping off point for future exploration, but Uhura is convinced she heard something on the comm bands. When she starts seeing horrifying visions, M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) and Pike chart it up to her being overtired, but she thinks there’s something more.

When Pelia (Carol Kane) discovers evidence of sabotage on the station the mystery deepens.

Lt. Kirk meets Uhura and expresses concern over her state of being, but listens to her, and begins to believe her story. With some help from him, and his brother, Sam (Dan Jeannotte), they may be able to save the day, and perhaps the lives of the beings that are living in the deuterium clouds and being killed by the station.

This is a great Uhura episode, and it also helps fill out characters even more. We get a glimpse at how Spock and Chapel are doing, we see the sibling relationship between Sam and Jim, we see how the Una (Rebecca Romijn) and Uhura deal with the loss of Hemmer (Bruce Horak), and we see the founding of some great friendships that will endure for decades.

Thoughtful and fun, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – Season Two continues to entertain, and you can watch the entire season on DVD, Blu-Ray or gorgeous 4K, available now from Paramount Canada.

Boldly Go.
