Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2023) – Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, and Among the Lotus Eaters

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow gives us a time travel story in the vein of The City on the Edge of Forever, Tomorrow is Yesterday, and Assignment: Earth. Written by David Reed, the episode first aired on 29 June, 2023.

La’an (Christina Chong) is still trying to find her way back to the crew after her time away, but she’s about to end up even further away when a dying time travel gives her a device warning her to get to the bridge and the timeline changes!

Arriving at the bridge she discovers the Enterprise is under the command of James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) and Earth is at war with the Romulans, and the Federation was never formed. Inadvertently, Kirk and La’an trigger the device and they find themselves back in the 21st century, specifically, Toronto!

There’s a new bridge that has just been constructed that will connect Toronto with the States, crossing over Lake Ontario (it sometimes looks like it’s at the end of Yonge Street, other times a little further east, it’s hard to exactly pinpoint where it springs from our city – but man, it’s great to see TO as TO).

But this new bridge explodes, and Kirk and La’an find themselves trying to figure out when the timeline diverges and what big event causes it. It seems that Toronto in the 21st century is the first target in a Romulan attack!

Why? Because it seems there’s someone in the city, in a research laboratory who, if killed, will prevent the Federation from ever forming, and it’s a great reveal about who it is.

Pairing La’an with Kirk is great, and the actors have a great chemistry together which lets you totally buy into the developing relationship between them, and hurts all the more when things happen and the timeline is restored.

It’s a great episode that takes it’s time, has a lot of fun and emotional impact doing it, and really leans into the wonders of being Canadian! There’s also a nice payoff with Pelia (Carol Kane).

Somehow this season is topping season one, and the first season was amazing!!

Among the Lotus Eaters was written by Kirsten Beyer and Davy Perez, and it first debuted on 6 July, 2023.

The Enterprise is given a special assignment that sees it, and Pike (Anson Mount), return to Rigel VII, the planet featured in the original pilot, The Cage. It seems something was left behind, because scans of the planet show the Starfleet delta showing up in a number of places, including the palace.

A meteor impact a thousand years ago, has reduced the planet to a stormy, snowy mess, and something seems to be having an effect on memory…

Pike, La’an, and M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) are the landing party, and shortly after arriving, they discover what was left behind. One of the previous landing party that was lasted as KIA, Zac Nguyen (David Huynh), who somehow seems impervious to the memory loss that is not only affecting the landing party, but the crew of the Enterprise in orbit.

Pike and the rest struggle to resist the memory loss, and emotion may lead them through. Pike’s recent interactions with Batel (Melanie Scorfano) may help him to remember, but will it be enough.

This is a solid episode, but may be my least favourite of the season. I love the performances, and the story, but it just didn’t captivate me as much as the other episodes to date. But man, I love watching this cast do anything, and it gives Ortegas (Melissa Navia) a couple of iconic moments.

My journeys with the Enterprise continues next week as I explore more of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – Season 2. It’s available now on DVD, Blu-Ray and a beautiful 4K, from Paramount Canada. Boldly go.
