James Cameron’s epic Oscar-winning film, Titanic, finally comes to 4K in time for the holidays, and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) have never looked better.
Man has this film come a long way. I remember seeing this on the big screen and marvelling at the spectacle Cameron put on the screen. It was a technological achievement that definitely drove Cameron forward on his following ventures. From the big screen, it moved on to a massive, double VHS cassette release – you couldn’t watch the whole thing uninterrupted! – then the first DVD, the Blu-ray, a 3D remastering for theatrical release, and now, finally, 4K – and it remains a beautiful-looking film.
Cameron has to be happy with how the film looks and sounds on 4K, it’s so sharp and clear, the picture is vibrant, and the sound from the dialogue, and effects to James Horner’s beautiful score is crystal clear.
It’s gorgeous.

And for those of us who love our behind-the-scenes stuff, it’s all here, there’s a whole Blu-ray dedicated to the special features. There’s a brand-new featurette, Stories From the Heart that shares clips, interviews and footage new and old from the making of the film. It even addresses the whole ‘could Jack have gotten on the door as well?’ question. There’s 25 Years Later with James Cameron, a new Behind the Scenes look with Jon Landau, who also gives an intriguing look at the marketing behind the film, as well as its iconic trailer.
All of the legacy extras are there, Reflections on Titanic, deleted scenes with Cameron commentary, videomatics, galleries, the music video by Celine Dion (of course), all of the extras previously released can be found here. The 4K disc also has three different commentaries, one by Cameron, a cast and crew commentary, and one by historians Don Lynch and Ken Marschall.
The film remains an engrossing watch, even though the story at its heart is simple and melodramatic, though beautifully executed. Married with documented historical events, it draws in the viewer each and every time, and of course, you’ve got the wonderful chemistry between Winslet and DiCaprio.
Cameron is a known perfectionist, he wants what he wants, and he works until he gets it, and this time it pays off fantastically. The film walked away with 11 Academy Awards, and remains a towering achievement in Cameron’s career, and now you can watch it and see all the attention to detail, all the magic of the production design, the fantastic cast… you can see it all in fantastic detail.
Set sail on the ship of dreams, and bring home Titanic on 4K, available today from Paramount Canada!
