Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – Season 2 4K Steelbook

I loved Star Trek: Strange New Worlds when it debuted. The first season introduced us to new and familiar characters and put us aboard a beloved, but different, starship, the Enterprise. Anson Mount leads the cast as Captain Christopher Pike, and the first season won its way into hearts of fans and critics across the globe.

With less serialized storytelling but ongoing character arcs, SNW feels like a cross between modern storytelling and classic The Original Series adventures. Over the course of ten episodes we were re-introduced to the characters of Spock (Ethan Peck), Una (Rebecca Romijn), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) and Chapel (Jess Bush) and we met Ortega (Melissa Navia), La’an (Christina Chong).

This crew of the Enterprise is a few years before Kirk (Paul Wesley) assumes command and their first season of adventures was amazing, So how do you top that?

With season two of course!

And you can bring it home on physical media today, including a collectible 4K steelbook edition, from Paramount Pictures!

If season one walks us into the world, season two ups the speed to a run and delivers great moments, and great episodes over and over again, it revisits great science fiction tropes that Trek has explored countless times, like time travel, it tackles a brilliant crossover with the animated Star Trek series Lower Decks, and for the first time ever, there’s a musical episode (with music and lyrics by Letters to Cleo’s Tom Polce and Kay Hanley) – and it works! And it’s still Star Trek at the same time.

From the courtroom drama that decides Una’s fate, to the heartbreak La’an experiences from her time travel to the appearance of another legacy character, season two of Strange New Worlds is a fantastic watch. It also brings us a new engineer for the Enterprise, Pelia (Carol Kane).

And it goes without saying that each moment looks and sounds fantastic in 4K.

I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t get excited about the behind-the-scenes stuff and extras, and the steelbook has a couple of extras just for the release. There are character magnets that can replace the current steelbook cover, there’s a fold-out mini-poster for the musical episode, Subspace Rhapsody, and the discs themselves include deleted and extended scenes.

But there’s more, the behind-the-scenes featurettes take a look at the props, the costumes (and their influences), an exploration of the classic Gorn species and how they have evolved since TOS, a fun look at the musical episode, and an episode length look at the entire season.

I love Star Trek, and I enjoy every iteration of it, but Strange New Worlds really speaks to me, and this season is a fantastic collection of stories, character beats, nods, and it very much is classic Star Trek.

It’s hard to believe there was a time when we only had three seasons of The Original Season, and how the universe has grown since then, and the passion that has grown with it.

Beam me up for more Strange New Worlds, lets boldly go!
