Quiz Lady (2023) – Jessica Yu

Awkwafina and Sandra Oh play sisters in the very enjoyable, Quiz Lady, which I missed at TIFF but was delighted to check out when it hit streaming platforms.

Anne (Awkwafina) is quiet, set in her routines, and has some mental health issues that keep her confined to her job, and her couch, where she and her dog, Mr. Linguini, watch Can’t Stop the Quiz hosted by Terry McTeer (Will Ferrell) every day.

When she receives word that the rest home that houses her mother has lost her, she and her flamboyant sister, Jenny (Oh) are reunited and learn that their mother hasn’t passed but has run away… all the way to Macau, leaving Anne and Jenny with $80,000 in debt to a bookie who is looking to collect and will hold Mr. Linguini for ransom until the money is handed over.

As the sisters clash and try to deal with the drama that has erupted, Jenny realizes that Anne is not only smart, but very smart, and seems to know every answer to every question on Can’t Stop the Quiz.

Jenny works at pushing Anne out of her comfort zone as they begin a trip that will take Anne to the auditions for the show.

Delightfully quirky, filled with eccentric characters including a fun turn by Holland Taylor, the film is surprisingly emotional, and packed with some well-delivered laughs. Awkwafina turns in a restrained performance while Oh lets everything out, and both of them look like they are having a great time together, the chemistry is perfect.

There is a solid cast supporting the main cast, including Jason Schwartzman, Tawny Newsome, Tony Hale and a very funny appearance by Paul Reubens.

It’s a fun look at the bond between sisters, as well as incredibly entertaining. It’s an examination of family, pushing beyond your limitations, and chasing your dreams, and the final round on the game show perfectly illustrates how families understand one another.

This one was a lot of fun, and it passed the evening delightfully as I got more and more wrapped up in the eccentricities of the story and characters, and still found myself completely emotionally involved with everything that happened.

Pairing Awkwafina and Sandra Oh was a brilliant casting choice and watching them play off of one another is hilarious, and leaves you to wonder how they maintained a straight face through some of the scenes.

Quiz Lady is screening now on Disney+ and is the perfect film for sisters or a fun little date night.
