Batman (1968) – The Joke’s on Catwoman, and Louie’s Lethal Lilac Time

The episode opens with Batgirl (Yvonne Craig) saving herself, for a delightful change, from Joker (Cesar Romero) and Catwoman (Eartha Kitt) and gears up to send the Dynamic Trio after the supervillains (once again). The Joke’s on Catwoman was written by Stanley Ralph Ross and first aired on 4 January, 1968.

The villains continue their hunt for the buried gunpowder, which they will use to steal money from the Federal Depository. Happily, our heroes hear all of the plans and a mistake in the translation of the map causes the baddies to be caught, and brought before judge and jury.

But madcap wackiness ensues when Catwoman arranges representation in the form of Lucky Pierre (Pierre Salinger). Batman is apparently the prosecuting lawyer, which is a bit too weird, but the show has been getting further and further out there. The jury finds them not guilty, and that’s because Pierre has stocked the jury with criminals! In lieu of a change of venue, a massive round of fisticuffs follows.

The villains are captured again, and get carted off to jail, apparently this time without a trial.

With Julie Newmar’s Catwoman gone, the flirtation and suggestive dialogue between Batgirl and Batman (Adam West) is front and centre, and who can blame them, she is smart and cute! Of course, it can only be suggestion because the show is a little too camp and Batman despite being a vigilante is civic-minded and law-abiding.

And just as things get wrapped up nicely, Louie the Lilac (Milton Berle) announces his return at Barbara Gordon’s library!

Louie’s Lethal Lilac Time was written by Charles Hoffman and first aired on 11 January, 1968.

Bruce Wayne, Barbara Gordon and Dick Grayson (Burt Ward) are enjoying some time at Bruce’s beach house at Ambergris Bay when Bruce and Dick are seized by Louie and his gang, as Dick and his friends seemed to have discovered some large chunks of Ambergris.

Louie is looking to corner the perfume market and with some advice from Lotus (Nobu McCarthy) he is told about a number of animal glands that he sends his gang out to get while announcing his plans to hold Bruce and Dick for ransom. He also plans on making Bruce remove the animal glands when the creatures arrive.

There is an excuse for some clips from previous shows to show how clever the pair are and any help that the information can provide to where they are and how to reach them.

While Alfred (Alan Napier) deals with the press inquiring about the missing millionaire, Barbara as Batgirl is determined to mount a rescue! With some help from Alfred, and the police, she tracks down the warehouse that is where Bruce and Dick are being held by Louie, and, surprise, surprise, fisticuffs ensue. After Batgirl is captured, of course, and then all three heroes find a way to turn the tables and put paid to Louie the Lilac.

Honestly, this one feels like a bit of a waste, Batgirl needs more spotlight showing she can be the hero without Batman, and the script is well, just dull.

The episode wraps up with the appearance of Nora Clavicle (Barbara Rush), whoever that is.
