Batgirl’s (Yvonne Craig) horrible theme song is heard again as Louie the Lilac (Milton Berle) comes into Gotham City to mess around with the Flower Children movement, he plans to use his stupefying plant spray to bring them all under his power, and be able to control world events!
Written by Dwight Taylor this episode was first broadcast on 26 October, 1967. It’s pretty far out man, as even Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) get into the groovy slang of the time.
They find themselves summoned to join the case by Batgirl’s alter-ego, Barbara Gordon, and the trio, working together again, square off against Louie in his hideout. This happens after the Dynamic Duo finds themselves in and escapes from a death-trap of carnivorous plants.
Batgirl shows up partway through the final fight, has a bit of a flirt with Batman, delivers a few solid kicks and then slips away on her bat-cycle accompanied by that terrible song.
The flower generation definitely gets played as straight as it can be, man. But they still come across as a little goofy, though their hearts and intentions are in the right place, which is something Batman and Robin can empathize with and relate to.
That’s because they’re tuned in, y’know?
It’s bright, colourful, silly, Berle, I feel isn’t given enough to do and may have benefitted from a two-part story, but it’s definitely goofy fun. And the episode sets up the arrival of the next villain in the revolving door of crime, (though why do they keep showing up so quickly if they are all vanquished so easily?) and we get the delightful return of Vincent Price as Egghead!
The Ogg and I has Egghead back in Gotham, joined by Olga (Anne Baxter), Queen of the Bessavorian Cossacks, and he brings with him the second two-parter of the season. Written by Stanford Sherman, part one was first broadcast on 2 November, 1967.
Egghead is planning on holding the city ransom. In exchange for their continued safety, the citizens of Gotham are to pay a ten-cent tax on every egg sold, something that could make the supervillain millions of dollars in a matter of days.
While our heroic trio attempt to deal with Egghead, Batman begins to suspect that Olga has a bigger plan at work, one that includes stealing the legendary samovar of Genghis Khan! And perhaps take a couple of husbands while she’s in town, specifically Egghead, and … Batman?
Batman and Robin show up at the villains’ hideout, no surprise there, but it seems this move was accounted for, and soon Robin and a kidnapped Commissioner Gordon (Neil Hamilton) find themselves being stirred into a wedding borscht for Olga and Batman.
Oh and watch for Alan Hale Jr. making an appearance as… Gilligan?
Will Batman be able to escape and save his ward and Gordon? Or will it fall onto Batgirl? I guess we’ll have to wait until next week to find out.
