Batman (1967) – The Wail of the Siren, and The Sport of Penguins

Hey! Batgirl has her own (terrible) theme song! And some fun appearances in the opening credits. The Siren (Joan Collins) is using her musical abilities to brainwash men to work for her, including Commissioner Gordon (Neil Hamilton).

The Wail of the Siren was penned by Stanley Ralph Ross and it first debuted on 28 September, 1967.

Using Gordon, she convinces Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) to meet him at Barbara’s (Yvonne Craig) apartment. But he doesn’t show. It seems Siren has tucked him into the trunk of the batmobile so that he can report back to her of the location of the batcave, and Batman and Robin’s secret identities!

She has a second plan as well that she’s putting into action, she plans to marry rich by putting Bruce Wayne under her spell, or at least controlling him long enough to get him to sign over all of his fortunes to her.

Robin and Batgirl team up to rescue Bruce and Gordon from Siren’s clutches. But Gordon bumps into Alfred (Alan Napier) in the batcave, though the butler is able to deal with the confusion, and dissuade Gordon from jumping to conclusions.

How will they resolve the problem, and how will they save Bruce and Commissioner Gordon from the fates that Siren has planned for them?

Everything plays out successfully for our heroes, and while I’m still developing my opinion on whether or not I enjoy her character she seems to be having a great time busting chops and striking heroic poses.

As the episode gets ready to close out, the bat-computer suggests that the Penguin (Burgess Meredith) is back (already!).

The Sport of Penguins was written by Charles Hoffman and was first broadcast on 5 October, 1967. Penguin is joined in his villainous activities by Lola Lasange (Ethel Merman).

The pair, who have a racehorse named Parasol ready to enter into the Bruce Wayne Handicap plan to clean up by betting on it, and replacing other horses with a condemned horse sent to a glue factory.

They are taking tons of bets, and ready to scheme everyone but our heroes are putting the clues together and they will confront the baddies at the glue factory. But will Penguin and Lasagne be ready for them?

Things are going to get very sticky.

Of course, Batgirl gets involved. It doesn’t help the situation when Penguin comes into the library where she works, steals a book and leaves a ticking umbrella, a bomb set to go off.

As they confront Penguin at the glue factory, fisticuffs ensue, and while the heroes are busy, Penguin douses the batmobile in glue leaving our heroes stuck, and leading right into the first cliffhanger two-part episode of the season!
