Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 – Part 2 Blu-Ray

While the future of the already completed season two ( #SaveStarTrekProdigy ) hangs in the balance, Paramount Canada releases Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 – Part 2 today on Blu-ray and DVD.

The final ten episodes of the first season continue the story of Dal (Brett Gray), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), Jankom Pog (Jason Mantzoukas), Zero (Angus Imrie), Rok-Tahk (Rylee Alazraqui) and Murf (Dee Bradley Baker) as they continue their journey on the stolen Protostar hoping to join Starfleet.

They continue to be counselled by a hologram form of Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and she’ll have a lot to say when the ship and crew encounter the Borg, discover the truth about the secret weapon installed on the Protostar and what it could mean for the Federation.

But there’s even more going on, as the hunt for the Protostar continues, led by Vice Admiral Janeway!

Through it all Gwyn’s father, The Diviner (John Noble) is working on his own plans related to the weapon aboard the Protostar and sees his intense desire to destroy Starfleet come to fruition.

The stories continue to focus on the characters and ground them in the reality of the Star Trek universe. The show may have been created to bring in younger viewers into the franchise but the stories aren’t toned down because of that. the Borg are still terrifying, and the truth about the Diviner, his plan and the fates of the Protostar crew are handled very well.

The two-disc set contains the whole second half of season one. There are no subtle or hidden hints about the fate of season two that I could find, but there are some solid extras. There’s a twenty-minute doc about the series, and two short docs about the production of the series centering on the planets that were created (and the music scored for them) as well as the starships that populate the series drawing the connective tissue from Star Trek: Nemesis to Star Trek: Picard.

The picture and the sound are great, I love the score by Nami Melumad. It is gorgeous and fits in perfectly with the scores of Treks past.

And while I will sit and worry about whether or not we’ll see season two, or anything beyond it, the first season of Star Trek: Prodigy is fantastic Trek. The show garnered itself an Emmy win, and another nomination, and is not only a great entry point for young fans, but also tells engaging and entertaining Star Trek for longtime fans as well.

Star Trek: Prodigy – Season 1 – Part 2 is available on Blu-Ray and DVD today from Paramount Pictures! Boldly go!
