It’s the final two-part story of the series, and the last episode of the second season as Mr. Freeze (this time played by Eli Wallach!) returns to Gotham City intent on building an ice weapon that will help him take over and control the world!
This two-parter was written by Charles Hoffman and the first episode, Ice Spy, debuted on 29 March, 1967.
A cruise ship is bringing Professor Isaacson (Elisha Cook Jr.) to Gotham City to do some work with Bruce Wayne (Adam West). Also on board is the lovely ice skater, Glacier Glaze (Leslie Parrish) who, if you can’t tell by her name is in league with Freeze, and is currently performing in a show organized by Wayne.
Freeze, with Glacier’s help, is able to abduct Isaacson and is prepared to torture him with extreme cold to get him to turn over his formula for creating instant ice. Isaacson, being from Iceland, tells Freeze he’ll have to do better than that.
Batman and Robin are called on to help rescue Isaacson and it includes a funny conversation with West playing both sides of a phone conversation between Wayne and Batman.
There’s also a strange window cameo, Cyril Lord shows up. A weird choice because his claim to fame is being known as the Carpet King… in England. This would have flown over most American viewers’ heads.
Of course, our heroes find Freeze’s hideout, fisticuffs ensue, and once again, they are caught and this time trapped in a freeze vaporizer! Will they escape? Will the series continue? And why do all these Mr. Freeze’s look different.
The Duo Defy aired on 30 March, 1967, and wrapped up season two with a bow as Batman and Robin (Burt Ward) escape the death trap Freeze has put them in.
Freeze finally gets the formula from Isaacson and is developing his new weapon, and issues a threat to freeze the entire country unless his demands are met!
The Dynamic Duo goes to work on finding Freeze’s new hideout, a converted iceberg with a periscope, and puts the bat-copter through its paces to do it. And they have the perfect way to track down the villain, one of his homing seals.
Of course, this leads to a final confrontation, this time the heroes will win the day, and they’ll send Freeze back to prison. Glacier, who has developed feelings for Bruce passes on a message to him through Batman, and the episode was up nicely with Bruce, Dick, Aunt Harriet (Madge Bake) and Alfred (Alan Napier) enjoying the new playroom Harriet has organized at Wayne Manor.
And let’s be honest after 60 episodes in a single season, the Caped Crusaders have earned a little play break.
Next week, we start the final season which will see a couple of new characters and familiar villains!
