Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) have some company in Gotham this week with the arrival of the Green Hornet (Van Williams) and Kato (Bruce Lee). This two-parter was written by Charles Hoffman, and the first episode, A Piece of the Action debuted on 1 March, 1967.
It seems the crimefighting duo is on the trail of a stamp counterfeiting ring led by Star Trek’s Harcourt Fenton Mudd, Roger C. Carmel as Colonel Gumm, who has, among his thugs the familiar faces of Alex Rocco and Seymour Cassel.
Batman and Robin are also involved in hunting down the stamp fakery and are dubious about whether the Green Hornet and Kato are on the side of the righteous or are involved in the scheme (which is weird as Batman’s alter-ego Bruce Wayne watched The Green Hornet on television, and the duos have crossed paths before because of a window cameo).
As the groups close in on Gumm, they converge on his stamp factory and fisticuffs ensue, which initially goes well for the heroes, but both groups end up getting trapped, Green Hornet and Kato end up in a stamp machine, which will turn them into oversized postage stickers, and Batman and Robin end up stuck on a flypaper-like wall.
I get that Green Hornet and Kato are visiting Gotham, but I wish they had been given more to do. I do like that Hoffman had written for both series so he knew how the characters sounded.
But how will our heroes escape?
Batman’s Satisfaction aired the following night on 2 March, 1967. Batman and Robin are able to escape their trap and are able to help Green Hornet and Kato escape from the stamp machine. But Gumm has other plans in mind, and he’s got a huge stamp heist in the works.
And it seems despite helping the visiting heroes escape from the stamp machine, the Caped Crusaders believe that the visiting pair are in Gotham for personal profit which is going to pit both groups of crimefighters against one another.
So as all the forces close in on the site of the crime, the three forces are going to collide, and we see Hornet square off against Batman, and Kato against Robin (come on, like Robin would have a chance against Bruce Lee?!) but don’t worry Colonel Gumm gets his comeuppance, and our heroes realize who is who, and who is on what side of the law.
We also get another window cameo, this time it’s actor Edward G. Robinson who engages the Dynamic Duo in some discussion on art while they climb the side of a building.
There is also some fun stuff with the bat-computer and trying to figure out secret identities, and the idea that Bruce could be the Hornet and Batman could be Britt Reid!
This is the 51st and 52nd episode of season two!!
