Taylor Sheridan has built a bit of an entertainment juggernaut with his Yellowstone series. It already had one limited series spinoff with 1883, and now Paramount Canada delivers the second one, 1923, on physical media, making it available on both DVD and Blu-Ray.
1923 continues exploring the story of the Dutton family as they run their Yellowstone ranch in Montana. We are introduced to Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and his wife, Cara (Helen Mirren), who has taken over the Yellowstone after the death of his brother James (Tim McGraw).
Jacob is also helping to groom his nephew John (James Badge Dale) and John’s son, Jack (Darren Mann) to one day take over the ranch. Cara is worried about the other nephew, Spencer (Brandon Skelnar) who served in World War I and has yet to come home, instead eking out a living in Africa, while dealing with the horrors of war that live in his head.
We are also given an exploration of the treatment of the indigenous peoples of America as we follow the story of Teonna (Aminah Nieves) who is being held at one of the Christian schools and having the ‘Indian beaten out of her.’

The story doles out an epic tale over the course of its eight episodes, plays with expectations, and explores the characters and the times they live in. Beautifully shot by Ben Richardson the series is beautiful to look at, even during its most brutal and tragic moments.
The acting, the story, the locations, the attention to detail, I find it all completely captivating, and exploring it repeatedly on the gorgeously appointed Blu-ray makes it all the more enjoyable.
Not only does it look and sound great, there are some solid extras on the three-disc collection. Each episode includes a featurette that takes you behind the scenes, a featurette about the series, as well as looks at the editing of the series, the continuing story of the Duttons, and a look at the Native American experience.
I’ve been a fan of Ford since I was a child, and I am really enjoying seeing this new chapter of his career as he explores television work, his efforts in 1923 (and Shrinking) are exceptional, and pairing him with such a stellar cast and such solid writing, there’s nothing to do but to sit back and enjoy the show, and ruminate on the Duttons, as well as the actual events taking place around them.
1883, 1923 and the first four seasons of Yellowstone are available from Paramount Pictures on DVD and Blu-ray, they are also available on Paramount +, but of you’re like me, and you love your physical media, the Blu-ray is a very welcome addition to the video shelf.
