Batman (1966) – Marsha, Queen of Diamonds, and Marsha’s Scheme of Diamonds

Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) may be in over their heads when Marsha (Carolyn Jones), the villainous Queen of Diamonds shows up in Gotham and has her eyes set on all the diamonds she can get her hands on, including the giant, super-pure bat-diamond that runs the bat-computer in the bat-cave.

This two-parter was written by Stanford Sherman, and the first part debuted on 23 November, 1966.

With Chief O’Hara (Stafford Repp) already under her control via her love darts, and Gordon (Neil Hamilton) not far behind, Marsha puts a plan into action that will see the Dynamic Duo fall under her sway (or at least Robin) as well, which will allow her access to the bat-cave and the giant diamond.

And if Batman ever wants his friends and associates to be free, he may have to succumb to her demands, that he marry her!

To help her in her plan, Marsha has a literal witch in the basement. Her Aunt Hilda (Estelle Winwood), who used to be a chemistry professor and is now leaning toward creating Marsha’s potions and her study of the occult. This seems to be a nice little nod to the character Jones was best known for, her role as Morticia Addams on The Addams Family.

Robin and Batman square off but the Dark Knight won’t fight his young ward, and Batman is maneuvered into an inescapable position. We are left with the cliffhanger of Batman and Marsha at the altar, making their vows, what will happen next!?

The next night, 24 November, 1966 saw the broadcast of the conclusion, Marsha’s Scheme of Diamonds. Will Batman go through with the wedding? It’s stopped just in time with the arrival of Alfred (Alan Napier) and Aunt Harriet (Madge Blake) who pose as a lawyer and Mrs. Batman respectively, getting Batman out of a jam and leaving Marsha to come up with a new plan.

Batman and Alfred are able to rescue Robin, O’Hara and Gordon, but Aunt Hilda concocts a new potion to help Marsha in her schemes. Is it possible she’s transformed the Dynamic Duo into toads?

But our heroes arrive at Marsha’s hideout and are taking on all of the henchmen, maybe they won’t fall victim to Hilda’s potion? But no, they end up captured after all and Gordon may fall for the idea that the pair have been changed into toads (or have they really been transformed?!)! And she won’t turn them back until Gordon shows her the way to the bat-cave.

No, it’s all a gambit, and Batman and Robin are able to stop Marsha once and for all, and Gotham City can settle down, while Hilda gets a job teaching Home Economics. All is well, at least until next week.
