Vincent Price shows up as Egghead, and we learn a dark secret about the Wayne family and the other founding members of Gotham, that being how much they paid the Mohican tribes for the land and the renewal of that contract every few years, all for the price of a few raccoon pelts. Ugh.
This two-parter (and who doesn’t want to watch Vincent Price do his thing?) was written by Stanley Ralph Ross from a story by Edwin Self. It first aired on 19 October, 1966.
It seems Egghead has found a loophole in the Mohican contract with the founding fathers. If he can prevent the delivery of the raccoon pelts to Chief Screaming Chicken (Edward Everett Horton), Egghead can take over the city.
But on top of that, the dastardly criminal may have a lead on the identity of Batman (Adam West).
There’s a lot of camp in this one, Price is perfectly cast, and his delivery is wonderful. Unfortunately, the way the indigenous characters get treated and portrayed, and the whole contract for nine raccoon pelts is a little much, and not done with a lot of sensitivity.
Batman and Robin (Burt Ward) try to locate Egghead, but can they find him in time? Or will they wander into a trap that will leave them in peril until the next episode?
In fact, it is Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson who wander into Egghead’s trap. He captures them on the way to the pelt ceremony and is convinced that Wayne is Batman. He straps him into a machine that will prove he’s right, or destroy Bruce’s mind!
What happens next?

The Yegg Foes in Gotham was broadcast the following night on 20 October, 1966.
As Bruce is tortured by Egghead’s machine, Dick is able to finagle some of the mechanics for it to short out, and then they are able to rescue their fellow kidnapped millionaires, even as Egghead and his thugs escape.
But they miss out on making the deal in time for Gotham City to remain leased from the Mohicans, and Egghead is able to take over the city and ban the Dynamic Duo from the city limits.
As the city descends into chaos, Bruce and Dick decide that the best thing to do is to sneak into the city and steal the city charter so that they can find a way to save Gotham.
Of course, Egghead betrays Chief Screaming Chicken, and our heroes are able to rescue him and figure out a way to track down Egghead and return Gotham City to the people. Our heroes track him down and is able to have huge fisticuffs, with lots of eggs being broken over heads.
There’s a window cameo featuring Bill Dana as his character creation Jose Jiminez. And all in all, it’s a campy and fun episode, though I hated the portrayal of the Mohicans throughout the story. But holy crap, Vincent Price was awesome!
