Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – Season 1 4K Review

Paramount Canada and Star Trek had the perfect gift for me as we sit here on the eve of the premiere of season two of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, season one of the fantastic series on 4k. This marks the first time any of the Star Trek television series have been released on 4K, and to mark the occasion, it’s also available in a gorgeous steelbook.

All ten episodes of season one are presented with the best picture and sound, images are sharp and crisp letting viewers revel in the details that fill the screen, and the audio puts you out there, letting you boldly go with the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

I loved every minute of season one of Strange New Worlds when it aired, I loved the new takes on classic characters, Anson Mount’s Pike, Ethan Peck’s Spock, Celia Rose Gooding’s Uhura, Rebecca Romijn’s Una, Babs Olusanmokun’s M’Benga. I have fallen in love with the legacy characters, and in love with the new characters for the series. There’s not a miscast role, not a moment that doesn’t feel like Trek to me.

And while there are narrative threads running through the whole season, this version of Star Trek has shifted back to the episodic form of storytelling. Sure there are overreaching arcs for the season, character threads and growth from episode to episode, but most stories are able to stand on their own, and each makes an easy boarding point for new viewers.

Everything from the blu-ray release is included in the new 4K version, and as much as I loved watching the blu-ray, for me, the 4K is all about the details. With the sharper image I love looking at the ship displays, the visual effects, and the textures of the costumes and sets, all of it adds in layers of reality that just bring it all that much more vividly to life.

Star Trek has been with me my whole life. I’ve never grown tired of it, I get excited with each new iteration, and to have a weekly series like Strange New Worlds (not to mention Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy and Discovery) I am loving the constant exploration of the human adventure, and reminded constantly that we as a species can be better, we can revel in and celebrate our differences and realize that we are stronger because of them and boldly go.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on 4K is a beautiful looking must-have for any Trek fan, and if you start today, you can get through the entire season and be ready for the premier of season two tomorrow!!

I cannot wait!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is available today on 4K, and is also available on blu-ray from Paramount Canada! Hit it!
