Hide (2022) – Kiersten White

I loved Kiersten White’s Mister Magic so I had to hunt down another novel by her, Hide. Once again, she delivers a tale that is very easy to curl up in and explore. It’s fast-paced, and White is wonderfully skilled at bringing her characters to life, but despite the promise of twists and turns, there wasn’t a lot in this one that took me by surprise.

That doesn’t mean it wasn’t a fun ride!

We’re introduced to fourteen characters, though Mack is our main connection, a young woman with a secret. She’s offered a chance to win a lot of money by signing up for a contest, a hide-and-seek contest set in an abandoned amusement park.

Is it part of a new reality show? There are a lot of NDAs to sign. But where are the cameras?

White tells a captivating story, and while I wasn’t surprised by any of the reveals, it all made sense to me from the get-go, White knows how to tell a fantastic story, and her characters are vibrant and real, even as they confront something horrific in the midst of the labyrinthine amusement park grounds.

While there may be nothing really new to the story that White tells, it’s very familiar to anyway even passingly familiar with the thriller or horror genres, it’s the way it’s told that makes this one shine. Despite knowing where the story was going, I wanted to devour each word, journeying beside Mack, well aware of what the confrontation would mean for her, and her new friends (?).

White is able to plunge you into the horror of the moment, the terror that the characters experience and make you feel each drop of sweat, each gasp of fear.

White definitely has a new fan in me, and I can’t wait to see what else she has planned storywise. She’s written some Star Wars, and a number of young adult series, as well as re-telling of Frankenstein so I’ve got lots of things to choose from, but I’m really hoping for something spooky and scary. She writes it so well! I want more and more, so please keep them coming.

If you’re looking for a page-turning thrill ride that has lots of great moments, and some very relatable characters then Hide is definitely a great place to start, and then check out Mister Magic! Has anyone read any of her other books? Any recommendations?
