Lost Girl returns to Showcase tonight for its season 4 opener! Has it honestly been 4 seasons already? I can remember the year that Kris Holden-Ried and Anna Silk were at Fan Expo before the show premiered, and Sue wanted to swing by to see what it was all about, but there was no fan activity there at all, and the next year, they filled the hall they were in.
And now that the characters are firmly established, and we know how everyone interacts and reacts, not to mention the rules that govern the world (or at least most of them) now is a prime opportunity for the writers, led by showrunner Emily Andras to mess with our expectations a bit and keep us on our toes.
The first episode of the new season is guaranteed to do that, as we watch the characters interact in a way we aren’t quite used to, as the multiple story threads, each with their own cliffhanger are slowly gathered up and woven into the tapestry that not only will form the backdrop of Season 4, but continue to expand the world our Fae live in.
I’ve seen the episode, but don’t ask me for spoilers, I would rather hear your reactions this evening after you’ve seen it. There’s bound to be a few WTF moments, a few moments of fan outrage (have to keep you on your toes of course), a number of well-earned belly laughs, and some general creepiness.
Without giving anything away, I will say this is a very heavy Kenzi episode, and Ksenia Solo is well up to the task, and it’s interesting to see some of the new dynamics at play in the episode. Everything feels familiar, and yet, it’s all just a little off, you’ll see what I mean. Even before the opening titles there are a half-dozen WTF moments that let you know that everything has been shaken up a bit since we last wandered Fae-dom.
As we’ve come to expect from Lost Girl, the writing is fun, Kenzi gets off some great one-liners, Vex makes an interesting fashion choice (apparently Paul Amos made the actual decision, kudos!), and guest star George Takei… Oh Myyyy.
I love what they’ve done with the first episode, and it, in my opinion, honestly suggests a fun and exciting season. Because now, we as viewers and fans, are coming into the show with expectations, and are comfortable with the characters, now is the time to start messing with those expectations, taking things in unexpected ways, and pushing our characters outside what we may expect, but is in line with who they are.
This is gonna be a lot of fun!
Sue and I, along with a select group of other writers and bloggers, were treated to a pre-screening a couple of weeks ago, and have had to sit on everything we’ve seen, and everything we’ve heard about the season. We did get to chat briefly with Anna and Emily after the screening, and both of them are very excited and very proud of the work they have done this season.
And after that first episode of the new season, I share that excitement and pride!
Bring it on!!!
